The working day / 2 min read

Book club tonight.

Bring one question to book club and a clue that gets everyone back to the scene.

Beside a Kindle showing “The space between,” an open notebook asks “Why did she stay?” and “What was she afraid of?” A black Pentel P205 lies diagonally across the facing page.
The Kindle shows an original story page. Keeping the questions on paper leaves them in view as you turn back through the book. Photo credits & image license.

Leave yourself a two-line note

“Why did she stay?” might be just the question for tonight. While the scene is open on your Kindle, write the chapter title and a detail you’ll recognize on the first line of your notebook. Put your question on the second. For the page in the picture, the first line could read “The space between — the waiting room.”

When it’s your turn, give the group the chapter and scene before you ask the question. Someone reading a paperback can follow along even if their page numbers differ.

Find the scene again on your Kindle

The 2024 Kindle Paperwhite has a 7-inch glare-free display. If the room is dim, you can adjust the screen’s warmth before you reread the passage. The Amazon link opens the black, 16 GB model with lockscreen ads. The photo identifies the generation, but its storage and ad settings are unknown.

If you already have the club’s book in print or on another reader, use that copy. A chapter title and a few words about the scene work in either format.

Pick a pencil for the notebook

The black Pentel P205 takes 0.5 mm lead. Its eraser comes in handy if a better question occurs to you halfway through the chapter. Any pencil you like writing with will do.

The paid Pentel link opens Amazon search results. For the version shown, look for P205A, black, 0.5 mm, and check how many pencils come in the pack. The photo shows a single pencil from 2019.
