Start with what you have

Before your next reading session, clear a place for the pages and leave room in the margin for notes. Keep your highlighter and pencil with the reading, leaving the text uncovered. When you stop, jot down one question to return to.

Already have tools you like? Use those. These two options give the tasks separate tools; neither is essential to the setup.

A highlighter for selected passages

STABILO BOSS ORIGINAL is one option for marking passages on your own pages. The current family has a chisel tip; STABILO lists 2 mm and 5 mm line widths. Try your paper on a spare sheet first. For borrowed reading, keep the page references on your separate note sheet instead.

A pencil for your own thoughts

Use the Pentel P205 for questions, page numbers, or a short summary in the margin. The US P205A option is black and takes 0.5 mm lead. Check those selections on the manufacturer page. Its lead and eraser are refillable; keep your current pencil if it already suits you.

About the photos and links

The highlighter photo dates from 2007 and the pencil photo from 2019. Current printing, packaging, and pack counts may differ; the highlighter’s exact current US SKU is unverified. One pictured pen does not promise a one-pen pack.

Highlighter photo: Stabilo boss original.jpg by Lauri Kymäläinen (Fileri), via Wikimedia Commons, photographed January 3, 2007. The photographer released it into the public domain, with an any-purpose fallback grant. The source author states that color correction was applied to preserve the pen’s appearance. This older design does not establish a current US SKU or retail pack.

Pencil photo: Pentel P205 0.5.jpg by Mr Yukio, via Wikimedia Commons, photographed October 13, 2019, CC BY-SA 4.0. It shows a black P205 0.5 mm pencil; current packaging and production details may differ.

Changes: the complete highlighter silhouette was selected with a new exterior mask; an existing cutout of the same pencil photo was reused. The photos were cropped, resized proportionally, and repositioned without changing their original colors, printing, or wear. Separate contact shadows were added. The photos were combined with an AI-generated desk, clipped pages, and background props. Original illustrative reading text was added to the paper; the social versions also add headings, product labels, and disclosures. The products were not generated by AI. This is a preparation scene, not evidence of hands-on testing.
